June 2019 products progress report

May 25, 2019 by

This is a brief summary of progress on our products, going back now three years to our most recent (June 2016) “quarterly” newsletter progress report. 😉

Of course, the InDesign plug-ins were all upgraded for CC 2017, CC 2018 and CC 2019, and the QuarkXPress XTensions to 2017 and 2018, with 2019 happening soon. These “mothership” upgrades appear automatic, but involve a lot of engineering and testing resources just to keep up, behind the scenes.

We’ll gloss over the hundreds of ongoing smaller improvements and bug fixes that are part of the normal process of keeping the products “in tune” and up to date. For those details, you can view each product’s release news using the “release history” links below.

Note that no matter what major version of “mothership” you’re using, as along as it’s still supported (InDesign CS5 through CC 2019, QuarkXPress 2016 through 2018), you can always update to the latest minor version of our products, and take advantage of the latest improvements. Just download from the relevant product page’s Downloads sidebar, install, and restart the mothership.

WordsFlow

  • Added full end note support (as they first appeared in CC 2018). This ended up being a wildly complex, multi-part challenge, given the way Adobe implemented end notes.

  • Added Link to Original Document as a way to use WordsFlow with a document not originally placed with it, and as a way to rescue corrupted WordsFlow links. Includes scripting support for automation.

  • Adds full scripting support for Place with WordsFlow.

  • Added page-reference index markers to .doc export, supporting them on update as well.

  • Introduced a product bundle with Silicon Publishing’s Silicon Connector for Box.

  • Made massive performance improvements in large table updates (whether Word or Excel). In one case, involving a 2000-row table, the improved code saw a 250-times speedup.

  • Reduced memory used during an Export to a fraction of what was required before.

  • Added change tracking on update, so you can see what happened to the story (how it was edited on both sides) after each update-merge.

  • Added rational support for style groups.

  • For further details: release history.

DocsFlow

  • Added support for the new Google Team Drives, in parallel with normal Google Docs files/folders.

  • Added support for the new Google Drive File Stream for local file system access on macOS/Windows.

  • Made same massive performance improvements as WordsFlow (see above) for large table updates.

  • Added full relinking support for Google Docs documents/sheets.

  • Added support for sharing import options among all documents in a book.

  • Added change tracking on update, so you can see what happened to the story (how it was edited on both sides) after each update-merge.

  • Added support for placing and updating from view-only Google Docs documents/sheets.

  • Reduced memory used during an Export to a fraction of what was required before.

  • Reduced the time it takes for a document with many DocsFlow links to open by deferring status updates of its DocsFlow links until the document is completely finished opening.

  • For further details: release history.

InData / Xdata

  • Added prototype frame “badges” (visibility controllable) to indicate which story is the prototype.

  • Made the fieldindex() function useful.

  • Adapted to the new macOS Sierra universal clipboard, for clipboard imports.

  • Made variables essentially unlimited in length.

  • Added full POSIX pathname support.

  • Added PDF import controls with the picture properties pictureimportpage and pictureimportcrop (Xdata).

  • For further details: release history.

InCatalog / Xcatalog

  • Added support for FileMaker Pro 15, 16, 17.

  • Added the Default field value qualifier.

  • Improved the InCatalog linker panel look & feel to better match InDesign’s updated user interface.

  • For further details: release history.
